Anima Rising after a Heart Attack Tao Te Ching

The Valley Spirit never dies
It is named the Mysterious Female.
Her gateway is the root of heaven and earth.
It is like a veil barely seen. Use it; it will never fail.

Tao Te Ching, Chapter 6

(37) Anima Rising

After I completed this drawing, I was suddenly reminded of alchemy, of pictures I had seen of alchemical processes contained in egg-shaped flasks. It was at this time that I started reading about alchemy and psychological processes.

In looking at the drawing now, from an alchemical perspective, my whitened body is being heated within the lunar, feminine light.  And, as in my earlier drawing of the pelican on a red-hot buoy, there are counterbalancing green forces at work here, cooling and protecting the process.

Jungians talk often about the “Anima,” the personification of the inner Feminine, the soul within the man. The Anima is an “animating” force, the principle of receptivity, of relatedness, of empathy and compassion.

Was the Anima leaving me, or was it manifesting itself?
